LAN Storage Discovery Saves Service Providers and IT Administrators Time, Money and Productivity

How can organizations identify and determine the data and files that must be backed up to ensure business continuity in the event of a data loss without spending needless time manually reviewing files across the LAN? It is much too difficult to manually determine the right files to back up and much too expensive not to determine the right files to back up. We identified this business need and developed a software tool called the “LAN Storage Discovery” tool.

Automatically Scan Files to Accelerate Data Classification and Cataloguing

The Client based LAN Storage Discovery tool enables Managed Service Providers (MSP) and corporate IT departments the ability to automatically scan all of the file shares on a LAN segment generating a list of files on that segment. The scan can be scheduled to maximize performance. It classifies and catalogs all of the files by extension type, old backups, media, Email, SQL, OS, applications, etc.; number of files in that extension, and file size (MB). LAN Storage Discovery then takes that data and makes it useful and actionable with reports that identify duplicate files as well as pinpointing the time since each file was last accessed. The reports can be exported and used in a “Recoverability Report” that a Service Provider can use to provide a prospective or existing customer with quantitative findings that can be used to rationalize and optimize backup and recovery operations to ensure they meet business objectives.

Available Reports

There are in fact three types of reports generated by the LAN Storage Discovery tool. These reports are:

  • One-click generated reports
  • LAN Files Summary
  • Other reports.

The one-click generated reports provide the most requested, important, and useful information. Windows DS-Clients have 12 one-click generated reports whereas the UNIX DS-Clients have 8. Each one- click generated report is saved into HTML or Excel file formats. One-click generated reports include:

How Our Comprehensive Data Protection Works Better

Many organizations struggle with the complexities and inadequacies of data protection point solutions. The good news is there is a proven, effective way to comprehensively protect all of your organization’s critical data sources, including:

  • Physical and virtual serversstorage 2
  • Databases
  • Applications
    • Mobile endpoints
  • Public SaaS-based applications like Salesforce, MS Office 365 or Google Apps
  • Public infrastructure platforms like Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure

Upgrading your organization’s data protection solution to our solution provides this and more. We provide your organization- wide visibility into the status of all your protected data sources, so that you can be sure there are no protection gaps, or immediately identify them and take action.

  •  See an architectural overview of how our solution protects your data. Two key points:

  • Your corporate data sources, both inside and outside your firewall, are automatically and agentless backed up according to rules you define
  • Each backup data set is encrypted, compressed, and de-duped before being sent to a secure data center of your choice off in the cloud (usually that data center is located remotely for disaster recovery purposes, but it could just as easily be your own on-site or off-site private or hybrid cloud)

Although we offer a single comprehensive solution, it doesn’t force one-size-fits-all protection on your data sources. Instead, you have full control and flexibility to set the level of protection that meets your organizational objectives, on a granular basis. For example, perhaps you want email from your Sales department to be backed up daily, email from all other departments to be backed up weekly, and production databases to be backed up hourly.
